I have decided to wait on that vacation I was talking about. The reason? I have a feeling that the economy is going to get worse before it gets better, and I want to save as much money as I can now to prepare for the worst case scenario of losing my job.
With the economy still struggling, and consumers tightening their belts, the travel industry is doing as much as they can to get us spending. This is probably why I have seen a lot of great travel deals recently - Southwest.com had a 50% off flights sale last week, travelocity is having a 50% off top hotels sale now, and British Airways’ one way sale fare from Seattle to London is a mere $178.
The deals are great, but in such a consumer market, I am hoping that such deals will continue. And when I feel more confident about the amount of savings I have for a rainy day, I will be sure to take that vacation. But for now, I take solace in knowing that if things were to become worse, my future self will thank me for restraining myself.

For my the opposite worked. I am going away in mid Feb and instead of waiting for the last minute I booked well in advance and the prices have gone up since. I guess it depends on the market you live in because some areas have an easier time selling vacation packages.
Yes, I agree that what works best will vary from market to market, and will also be affected by one’s tolerance for risking not being able to take a vacation at all if prices go up radically. Thanks for the comment
